Les dynamiques religieuses et l’interaction entre la religion et la laïcité à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey

Bello Adamou Mahamadou conducts this research project.

Religious diversity marks Abdou Moumouni University with Muslim groups (Salafi, Sufi, Shiites, Tablighi, etc.), Christians (Catholics, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, etc.), Baha’i, etc. coexisting on the same campus. This project sets out to study religiosity in a context until recently dominated by Marxism-Leninism. One of its goals is to understand how religion managed to acquire significance in the lives of students.

The project investigates also the interactions between Salafi and Pentecostals, the ways in which they influence and borrow from each other, and share the same campus. It is particularly interested in analyzing the strategies religious organizations use to persuade students to embrace religious practice.

Finally, and as part of study of religiosity on campus, the project will examine how religion (mainly Salafism and Pentecostalism) interacts with secularity. This dimension of my project entails examining how university authorities manage religious organizations on campus.
